Light, elegant, sumptuous, delicate and feminine. The clothes in Dior’s Haute Couture Fall/Winter 2020-2021 collection are simply perfect and their perfection needed a presentation to match.
During the months of lockdown, Maria Grazia Chiuri thought of an alternative to the traditional fashion shows – canceled due to the pandemic – that would leave us equally astonished and breathless. Thus was born Le Mythe Dior, a 14-minute film in which the garments of the collection and their essence become the protagonists of a bucolic and surreal fairy tale directed by Matteo Garrone.
In the Dior atelier, the seamstresses are busy preparing small scale models of the clothes that, once ready, will undertake a journey into an enchanted world, populated by mermaids, nymphs, fauns, transported inside a trunk that reproduces in scale the famous palace of Avenue Montaigne in Paris.
The idea of the journey is a clear reference to the Théâtre de la mode, the traveling shows that during the post-war period had the objective of presenting the new creations of French haute couture in the main European cities, such as Paris and London, but also in the United States.
Le Mythe Dior is not only a tribute to the history of the Maison but also a tribute to art, female beauty and the woman seen as a muse who not only inspires art but is herself a work of art to be admired.
“Surrealist images manage to make visible what is in itself invisible. I’m interested in mystery and magic, which are also a way of exorcising uncertainty about the future” – Maria Grazia Chiuri
